The program of study leading to the M.Sc. degree requires course work and a thesis (non-thesis option is available). The thesis is based on a research project that involves, in part, original material.
The Ph.D. is awarded upon achievement of a high degree of mastery in a field of knowledge and upon demonstration of a distinct ability to make a substantial creative contribution to that field. The mastery in a field of knowledge is demonstrated through course work and examinations; the creatrive contribution to that field is demonstrated through the dissertation.
Each graduate student (full-time or part-time) has a faculty advisor. This professor helps the student plan an academic program of course work consistent with the degree requirements and the sudents' educational objective. The advisor also supervises the student's research and thesis/dissertation.
A studdent is assigned an advisor at the time of initial registration. If, at that time, the student specifies his/her future research interest in a specific area, then the advisor represents that area.  For students with no clearly specified research interests, the advisor directs the entering student's work during the period in which the student is becoming acquinted with the institution and determining the focus of research interests. The student may request a change of advisor any time before the appointment of his/her Master's/Doctoral Commitee.
